RS-232 and RS-485 Port Test

         Windows XP Setup

• Change the properties of the Local Area Connection. 
• Go to Start, Settings, and then Network Connections. 
• Select Local Area Connection and then Properties. 
• Scroll down the list and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).  If IP information is  shown under Use the following IP address, make sure to write it down before proceeding.
• Select Use the following IP address and enter an IP address that is similar to the NPort 5110, except for the last two digits.

         Hardware Setup

• Connect an ethernet cross-over cable from the computer to the  NPort 5150.

         Moxa NPort Management Suite

• The first step is to configure the ethernet side of the NPort 5110. 
• Open the NPort Management Suite and select Configuration. 

• Select the NPort (MAC Adress) and configure the settings.
• Select Network and modify the IP Address, NetMask, and Gateway.

• Select Serial, then select Modify, double click the information line and select the Settings. 

• Set the baud rate to 9600, 8,N,1, No flow Control, enable FIFO. The    Interface tab is either set to RS-232 or RS-485, 4 wire, depending on what  signal is being tested. 

• Select Operation Mode, then select the Modify tab, double click the information line and select View Settings tab. Set it for Real Com Mode. 
• Select OK and the settings will be updated in the NPort 5110.

• The next step is to configure the com port.
• Select COM Mapping and double click the information line to change the serial settings. If there is no information is shown, select Add Target.

• Select the NPort required and click OK.

• Select Basic Settings and choose a com port.

• Select Serial Parameters and set for 9600,8,N,1, no flow control.  Click OK.

• Select Exit. 

Reboot the computer at this point, before doing the loopback test.

HyperTerminal Loopback Test

         Test the RS-232 communication port

• Jumper pins 2 to 3on the Moxa NPort DE-311 DB9 com port.
• Pin 2 -> TXD       Pin 3 -> RXD  
• In Windows XP, go to start, programs, accessories, communications, and select HyperTerminal.
• Type a name for this project.          

•  Select the com port that was assigned in Real COM Installer.

• Com port settings are 9600, 8, N, 1, None.  Click OK.

• Type a message and it will appear on the HyperTerminal screen. This confirms the RS-232 communication port works accordingly. Test this procedure by removing the jumper.  As you type, the characters will not appear on the HyperTerminal screen.   

         Test the RS-422/485 communication port

• Jumper pins 2 to 3 and 1 to 4 on the Moxa NPort DE-311 DB9 com port using two paperclips.
• Pin 2 -> RXD+(B)       Pin 3 -> TXD+(B) 
• Pin 1 -> RXD-(A)        Pin 4 -> TXD-(A) 
• Repeat the HyperTerminal Loopback Test.

How to configure the StreetSmart ethernet port

• Connect an RS232 cable to COM O of the Adaptive StreetSmart controller board

  

• Open the Diagnostic program in the AlphaNet software
• Configure the Serial Settings, 9600, 8, N, 1  and select OK

• Select Set Custom Commands   

• Select Command 3
• Select Open Ini File 

When entering the IP address or subnet mask make sure to enter three numbers before each dot.      ie.    010.011.011.254

• Input the IP address and Subnet Mask
• Type under Command 3  in capital letters
• _01Z00_02EUi010.001.001.060_04
• Type under Command 4  in capital  letters 
• _01Z00_02EUs255.255.255.000_04
• Save and close

• Select Command 3 and the button will turn on.
• Click on Refresh and the IP address will update.
• Select Send  (takes 30 seconds to update the EPROM)

• Confirm the IP address in StreetSmart display by typing _01Z00_02FUi_04             
• Select Enter Your Own Command Text
• and after 30 seconds the changes will appear in the Results box

• Recycle power on the StreetSmart led display and the new IP address will appear on the diagnostic startup of the display.

      Recommended Procedure For A Sight Survey And Install

• Access point (receiver) 192.168.1.232
• Bridge  (transmitter) 192.168.1.231
• Clear line of sight required, free of obstructions (ie. trees).
• Maximum distance between Acesss point and Bridge is 300 feet. 

       Changing your computer’s IP address to communicate with the Access point (sign side)

• Change the properties of the Local Area Connection.
• Go to Start, Settings, and then Network Connections.
• Select Local Area Connection and then Properties.
• Scroll down the list and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
• Select Use the following IP address and enter an IP address that is similar to the Bridge, except for the last two digits.
• Connect an Ethernet crossover cable from the PC to the Bridge.

        Site Survey using Windows Explorer

• Open Windows Explorer
• In the address bar type ftp://192.168.1.231 and click GO.  

• At the login prompt, type admin for the Username and Password
• The EnGenius main screen will appear.
• Click on Wireless Network 

• The Wireless Network screen will appear.
• Click the Site Survey button.

• The Site Survey sreen will appear.
• Look for the EnGenius radio. If not present, click the refresh button.
• If more than one EnGenius radio is present, refer to the MAC address of the radio required.
• The Signal column (dbm) in this window will show the signal strenght.

         Signal Strength Scale Guide

0 to -50   indicates Strong signal strength

-75 to -100   indicates Excellent signal strength

-51 to -75   indicates Good signal strength

Overview

MaxStream XStream wireless modems can now be security coded by applying a Vendor Identification (VID) number. This procedure will protect against unwanted intruders.

Procedure

• Connect the MaxStream XStream to the computer using a straight through serial cable.
• Only dip switch 1 is in the on position.
• Apply power to the XStream.
• Open the MaxStream X-CTU software. Should a Windows error box appear it means the XStream unit is not connected to the computer.
• Select the Modem Configuration tab and the Read tab to acquire the modem parameters. A Version box will appear. In order for this procedure to work change the version to 42B5 .

• Select the Write tab and at the bottom of the screen will appear Complete.

• Select the Terminal tab to enter AT commands.
• Holding down the the shift key and typing +++ simutaenously will acknowledge an OK.  If necessary repeat this step until you see the OK.
• Continue the following steps in a timely manner or you will have to repeat the above step.
  

• Type atid and the VID code of the modem will appear in red.

• Type atid 4444 as the new number and press the Enter Key. The Ok will appear.

• This new number must be saved to non-volatile memory using a Write Command (ATWR) .  Otherwise, the VID code revert to the orginal number when the modem is powered off and then on again.
• Type atwr and press the Enter Key. OK will appear.

• Type atcn to exit the command mode.
• Repeat this step for the corresponding XStream wireless modem.

Overview

• Red power led is on.
• X-CTU software (Maxstream) does not detect the 9XTend modem.
• Can ping the MaxStream (Digi) ethernet wireless modem.
• Yellow and green I/O leds are not flickering simultaneously during transmit.

• Remove the original power adapter (JP4P2-9V4-6F). The technical specifications are 120VAC,  60Hz with an output is 9VDC at  400mA.  The defective unit may have an output of  12.75VDC. The Maxstream 9XTend wireless modem will power accordingly; however, the circuitry inside is in an overload state.  
  
• The new power adapter ( JRSP2-9V11-6F Rev A) is 100 -120VAC, 47-63Hz with an output of 9VDC at 0.5Amp, will fix this problem.

Moxa’s Serial to Fiber Converter Family Introduction

Moxa’s serial to fiber converters which include TCF-90 and TCF-142 for entry level, ICF-1150 series for industrial grade and NRack System for high density solution. Also include CP-102UF which is a multiport serial board with fiber optic interface.

The TCF-142 media converter is equipped with a multiple interface circuit that can handle RS-232 or RS-422/485 serial interfaces and multi-mode or single-mode fiber. TCF-142 converters are used to extend serial transmission up to 5 km (TCF-142-M with multi-mode fiber) or up to 40 km (TCF-142-S with single-mode fiber). The TCF-142 can be configured to convert either RS-232 signals, or RS-422/485 signals, but not both at the same time.
