• Equipment Required

• Vivotek IP Camera
• In this example a D-Link DSL-2640B router is used. Obtain a router that has port forwarding capabilites.  Routers, that are provided
• by internet service providers (ISP) may have custom firmware that blocks this feature.

• Vivotek IP camera Setup

• Open the Installation Wizard 2 and select the IP camera.

• Select Configuration

• Select Security
• Under the Manage Privilege, select Allow anonymour viewing and click Save. Checking this box allows any client to view.

• Select Network.
• Enter the LAN information for the Vivotek IP camera.
• Enter your Primary DNS (Domain Name Server), which is provided from your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
• Click Save.

• In the Network area, scroll down to HTTP.
• Authenication is Basic.
• HTTP port is port 80. This allows you to access the internet.
• Secondary/HTTP Port is 8085.
• Click Save.

• Router Setup

• Type the IP address of the router in the web browser.

• Select the Advanced tab.

• Select the Virtual Server tab

• Select the Add tab and enter the IP camera information.
• Server Name: Camera
• External Port Start: 80
• External Port End: 80
• Protocol: TCP
• Internal Port Start: 80
• Internal Port End: 80
• Server IP Address: 192.168.1.72 for this example (IP address of the Vivotek camera)

• Scroll down and Logout

• Webpage Setup

• Open your web broswer and type moxaonline.com/camera.html
• Select Source

• Copy the Source code from the moxaonline.com/camera.hml website.

• Open your web editor program.  If you do not have this software, use Kompozer –> http://kompozer.net/ It is easy to use and donations are accepted.

• Paste the source code from moxaonline.com/camera.html

• Select the Split tab and the Design will appear at the top for visualization purposes.

• The width and height of the IP camera window can be adjusted.
• Insert the Static IP Address that is supplied by your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

• In this example the webpage is redirected after three minutes of viewing.  Remove the redirect to another webpage information, if not required.
• The purpose of this redirect is to save bandwidth and making the viewing window smaller also helps.
• The formula is 1000m sec = 1 second.  Therefore; 1000 (milli seconds) x 60 (seconds) x 3 (minutes) = 180000
• Change the address location and details of the redirect.

• Once the Source has been modified, now it is time to publish on the web.
• Select Publish As

• Select the Settings tab.
• Type the HTTP address.
• Type the Publishing address.
• Enter the Username and Password for your website.

• Select the Publish tab.
• Type in the Page Title
• Type in the Filename.  In this example it is camera.html
• Select the Publish tab and exit.

• The webpage must be viewed from a location outside your LAN, otherwise, the viewing screen appear black.

• Explanation
• Use the Wireless Network Connection of a laptop to communicate to a remote serial device.
• The laptop has a distance range of 100m from the Moxa NPort W2150 Plus, in an open area.
• The remote device in this example is an indoor led display.
• The Wireless Network Connection of the laptop is set to Ad-hoc, allowing for computer to computer communication.

• Computer Setup
• In Windows XP, click Start, Settings and then Network Connections.
• Right click on the Wireless Network Connection, then select Properties.

• Select Internal Protocol (TCP/IP).
• Assign an IP address to the Wireless Network Connection. In this example use IP address: 192.168.1.10, Subnet: 255.255.255.0
• Click OK.

• Select the Wireless Networks tab.
• Select Advanced tab.
• Select Computer to Computer (ad hoc) networks only.
• Select Close.
• Select OK.

• Configure the NPort W2150 Plus
• Connect the laptop to the NPort W2150 Plus using a standard ethernet cable.
• Install Moxa’s NPort Search Utility.
• Open the NPort Search Utility.
• Select Search and the IP address of the NPort W2150 Plus will appear.
• Double click  the IP address and a web browser will open.

• Select Network Settings, then Ethernet Settings.
• Enter IP addres:  192.168.1.20 and Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

• Select the Back tab.

• Select WLAN and enter IP address: 192.168.1.30, Subnet: 255.255.255.0
• Select Submit.

• Select the Back tab.

• Select Profile.
• Change the Network type to Ad-h0c Mode.
• Select Profile 1.
• Slect Submit.

• Select the Back tab.

• Open Profile.
• Select General.

• Enter a name (ie. Moxa) in the SSID box.
• The default is Channel 6.
• Select Submit.

• Select the Back tab.

• Select Serial Port Settings.
• Select Operation Mode.
• Mode is TCP Server .
• TCP Port is 3001.  This is the port number of the Adaptive led display.
• Select Submit.

• Select the Back tab.

• Select Serial Port Settings.
• Select Communication Parameters.
• Baud Rate for the led display is 9600.
• Interface is RS-232.
• Select Submit.

• Select the Restart tab.

• NPort W2150 Plus Connectivity (wireless mode)
• Remove the Ethernet cable and locate at led display.
• Power is recycled for wireless operation.
• The WLAN light illuminates green.
• Connect the serial adapter and test using AlphaNet Diagnostic program.

• Laptop Setup using Windows XP
• Select START, Settings, Network Connections.
• Right click on Wireless Network Connection and View Available Wireless Networks.
• Select Moxa network and Connect.
• The Moxa network will say Unsecured Computer to Computer Network (Ad-hoc).

• Open AlphaNet Diagnostic program.
• Select Setup and a window will appear.
• Input IP Address:  192.168.1.30.  This IP address is also configured in the NPort W2150 Plus WLAN settings.
• The Adatpive led display port is 3001.
• Select Ping IP Address to verify a connection.
• Select OK.

• Select Connect TCPIP tab.

• The TCP/IP State will show connected.

• Select Broadcast Message tab.
• Select Send Messages to All Signs.
• Enter Message to Send.
• Select Address tab and input.
• Select Send.

• The message will transmit to the Adaptive led display.

• Explanation

• Serial ports on computers are becoming obsolete and being replaced with USB connectivity.
• USB ports are faster and easier to use than serial ports.
• The advantages of USB over serial ports are:
• 1) Speed –> USB is approximately 4000 times faster than the maximum speed of a serial port.
• 2) Connectivity –> USB connectors are smaller in size.  USB is a bus, which means USB hubs can be connected, allowing for additional devices to be on the same
• USB connection.
• 3)  Power –> USB ports supply 5 volts for peripherial devices. This feature is used to charge a device’s battery and also to power specific devices without the need for an external power adapter.
• 4)  Plug and Play –> USB devices are automatically configured when plugged into a computer.

• Converter Box III

• This is an RS-232 to RS-485 converter.
• The purpose of this converter is to communicate at distances up to 4000′ and networking serial devices.
• The power led illuminates red when power is applied.
• As the data is transmitted, both the RS-232 TXD and RXD leds will flicker rapidly and the leds will turn off when the process is completed.
• Below is a picture showing the Adaptive wire connections.

• Moxa UPort 1130
• This USB to RS-485 serial adapter has the latest drivers, diagnostic leds and the port number will remain set.
• There is a software disk included for modifying the USB port settings……..UPort 1100 Series Configuration Tool
• Connect the exisiting Adaptive wires as shown in the diagram below.
• The Active led will illuminate red when connected.
• Both the TXD and RXD leds will flicker rapidly as the data is being transmitted and the leds will turn off when the process is completed.

• Cellular IP Modems (Gateways) allow the user to communicate with serial or ethernet devices from a remote location.
• Cellular networks use GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) as a global standard.
• Data is transmitted to the remote device throught the use of the internet and a cellular modem.
• To gain a better understanding, the diagram below is broken into four sections:
• a) Server b) Internet c) Dynamic Cellular IP Network d) Moxa OnCell G3150 IP Modem

• Server
• This is a laptop and a software program called Moxa Oncell Central Manager.
• The program is free of charge –> http://moxaonline.com/web-store/oncell-central-manager-p-1291.html?zenid=a91a14d2f1cb803c108900e6231378f2,
• The first step is assign a static IP address on the laptop.
• Step 1
• Windows XP:  Click Start > Control Panel > Network Connections.
• Windows 7:     Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center.
• Step 2
• Right click on Local Area Connections and select Properties.
• Step 3
• Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.

• Step 4
• Click “Use the following IP address” and enter an IP address that is on the same subnet as your network or the LAN IP address of your router.
• Example: If the Moxa OnCell G3150 LAN IP address is 192.168.127.254, set the IP address of the computer to 192.168.127.x, where x is a number between 1 and 253, provided this IP address is not being used on your network.
• Step 5
• Click OK twice to save your settings.

• Internet
• A static IP address must be requested from your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
• Most internet users use dynamic IP addresses, which means each time they connect to the internet, their ISP assigns a new IP address.
• In order to communicate with the Moxa Oncell G3150 in the field, a static IP address must be assigned to the router.
• This static IP address is also identified in the Moxa OnCell G3150.

• Dyanamic Cellular  IP Network
• Obtain a M2M (machine to machine) data sim card.  The data sim card must have a dynamic IP address and an APN (Access Point Name) from the M2M service provider.
• M2M allows machines to communicate with one another over a cellular network.
• M2M is a platform that allows the user to diagnose issues, monitor, and to receive alerts.
• The Moxa OnCell G3150 is an industrial RS-232 and RS-232/422/485 GSM/GPRS/EDGE IP gateways (modem).

• Moxa OnCell G3150 IP Modems (Gateway)
• Cellular IP Modems use a non proprietary cellular technology called GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication).
• GSM is commonly used for voice calls and SMS (Short Message Service).
• In sending and receiving high speed data, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is recommended.
• GPRS is a digital based protocol that runs over the GSM network.
• GPRS is based on data and GSM is based on time.
• GPRS has two advantages over GSM: 1) Communication speed   2) GPRS enable devices are in the “always on” state. is communication speed.
• The communication speed of GPRS is 115Kbs and GSM is 9.6Kbs. This means that GPRS is roughly 11 times faster than GSM.
• The second advantage is GPRS enabled devices are in the “always on” state. This means that you are only charged for the amont of data sent and received.

Needham’s Electronics EMP-Series EPROM Programmer 

DOS program cannot access computer’s LPT port in Windows XP

       Overview

• Needham’s EMP programmers have DOS software.  When using Windows XP, the operating system prevents DOS programs from accessing the computer’s LPT (parallel) port. The EMP software will try to establish communication, but is unsuccessful.
• Instead, a screen will appear asking f you want to use the device in demo mode. 

      Solution

• empxp.zip file is required  –> www.manuauto.com\zip\empxp.zip 
• Unzip this file and select empxp.exe
• The EMPDRV Install screen will appear.
Select the Device Programmer and if you do not know the Port Base, click don’t know.
Select Install.

• A Special Instructions box will appear. Click OK.

• An EMPDRV Installer box will appear confirming that the driver was successfully installed.
• Reboot your computer.

•  The software must run in full screen for the driver to work.  Press the <ALT><ENTER> keys simultaneously for full screen activation.

• Wi-Fi signals from a router in a house range from 75 to 150 feet, depending on obstacles and their density. Range extenders or wireless repeaters can be effective, but run at much slower speeds. The Moxa AWK-3121 is designed to connect a remote computer to a wireless LAN over a TCP/IP network. It supports IEEE 802.11a/b/g standards.  Included are two 1 dbi dipole antennas, with a range up to 300′.  The range can be increased by using omni-directional (Dipole) or directional (Yagi) antennas.  Omni-directional antennas spread the signal throughout the house; whereas, directional focus the signal to a specific location.

• In order to connect the Moxa AWK-3121 to an exisiting wireless router, make sure the encryption method is WPA2-PSK and the wireless key is a match.  Avoid using WEP since it is vulnerable to attack.

Industrial Gigabit Firewall/VPN secure router

• Configure the Moxa AWK-3121 as an access point (AP or WAP).
• Apply 12-48VDC power or use PoE (Power over Ethernet). The Moxa AWK-3121 takes 20 seconds to run through its diagnostic state.
• The state light will go from red to green and the red fault light will turn off.

• If the fault light does not go out, this could be a caused by an IP address conflict. Check the Moxa AWK-3121′s configuration. You can also reset the Moxa AWK-3121 to the default configuration, by inserting a paperclip into the reset hole, located above the Moxa logo. Apply gentle pressure to the inside pin and hold it down for five seconds. Release and the AWK-3121 will recycle to its ready state.

• Computer Hardware Setup
• Connect the Moxa AWK-3121 toto a notebook or PC using an Ethernet cable.
• The Moxa AWK-3121 supports MDI/MDI-X auto sensing. This means you can use a straight-through or crossover cable. Once it is connected to the computer, the led indicator on the AWK-3121′s LAN port will illuminate.

• Computer Wireless Setup
• Go to Start, Settings and Network Connections.

• Select Wireless Network Connection

• Right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and select View Wireless Networks.  

• MOXA (default name) will appear as the SSID. This is the WLAN (wireless network LAN) identification name.

         Moxa AWK-3121 Configuration

• Open the Moxa AWK Search Utility.
• Search AWK only 

• The AWK Search Utility will appear.
• Click on the Search tab.

• Double click on the Moxa AWK-3121 that is going to be configured.

• The computer’s web browser will open.
• The Moxa default username is admin and the password is root. For security reasons, we strongly recommend changing the default password.                                                            Select Maintenance  -> Password, and then follow the on-screen instructions to change the password.

• Select Wireless Settings.

• In the Basic Wireless Settings, the standard default is Channel 6.  Recommend doing a site survey and trying channels 1, 6, or 11.
• If you experience any interference, simply change the channel.

       Laptop Connection

• Connect the 9XTend RF modem to the laptop using a usb cable.
• Connect the 9Xtend power adapter.
• Install the latest X-CTU installer software:  http://www.digi.com/support/productdetl.jsp?pid=3157&osvid=0&tp=5&tp2=0

       Remote Site

• The 9XTend RF modems have been tested up to 2 miles (3.21868 km) using the standard 2.1  dbi dipole antennas. The RF modems must have line of sight, with no obsticles blocking the path.

• The maximum legal antenna gain is + 6 dbi for a 1 watt transmitter @ 900 MHz. Combining a +8 dbi Yagi antenna  with a 10 foot coaxial RF antenna (-2 dbi) will meet this requirement. The diagram below shows the components for the remote location. A good power invertor for the 9XTend will ensure a successful test.

       X-CTU Software

• Select the PC Settings tab.
• Select the com port that is connected to the 9XTend.
• Select the Test/Query tab.
• A Com test/ Query Modem box will appear to confirm communication with the 9XTend modem, that is connected to the laptop. 

• Select the Range Test tab.
• Select Loop Back and the Transmit tab.
• Select the Start tab and the stats will appear.
• When satisfied with the results click the Stop tab.

Windows XP Setup

• Change the properties of the Local Area Connection.
• Go to Start,Settings, and then Network Connections.
• SelectLocal Area Connection andthenProperties.
• Scroll down the list and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).IfIP information is shownunderUse the following IP address, make sure to write it down before proceeding.
• Select Use the following IP address and enter an IP addressthat issimilar totheNPort 5110, except for the last two digits.

Hardware Setup

• Connectanethernet cross-over cable from the computer to the NPort 5150.

Moxa NPort Management Suite

• The first step is to configure the ethernet side of theNPort 5110.
• Open theNPort Management Suiteand select Configuration.

• Select the NPort (MAC Adress) andconfigure the settings.
• SelectNetworkand modify the IP Address, NetMask, and Gateway.

• SelectSerial, then select Modify, double clicktheinformation line and select theSettings.

• Set the baud rate to 9600, 8,N,1, No flow Control, enable FIFO. The Interface tab is eitherset toRS-232 or RS-485, 4 wire, depending on what signalis being tested.

• SelectOperation Mode, then select the Modify tab, double clicktheinformation line and selectView Settings tab. Set it for Real Com Mode.
• SelectOK and the settings will be updatedin the NPort 5110.

• The next step is to configurethe com port.
• SelectCOM Mappingand double clicktheinformation line to change the serial settings. If there is no information is shown, select Add Target.

• Select the NPort required and click OK.

• SelectBasicSettings and choose a com port.

• SelectSerial Parametersand set for 9600,8,N,1, no flow control.Click OK.

• SelectExit.

Reboot the computer at this point, before doing the loopback test.

HyperTerminal Loopback Test

TesttheRS-232communication port

• Jumperpins 2 to3on theMoxa NPort DE-311 DB9 com port.
• Pin 2 -> TXD Pin 3 -> RXD
• InWindows XP,go to start, programs,accessories,communications, and select HyperTerminal.
• Type aname for this project.

• Select the com port that was assigned inRealCOM Installer.

• Com port settings are 9600, 8, N, 1, None. Click OK.

• Type a message and it willappearon theHyperTerminalscreen. ThisconfirmstheRS-232 communication portworks accordingly. Test this procedure by removing the jumper. As you type, the characters will notappear on theHyperTerminalscreen.

TesttheRS-422/485communication port

• Jumperpins 2 to3 and1 to 4 on theMoxa NPort DE-311 DB9 com port usingtwopaperclips.
• Pin 2 -> RXD+(B) Pin 3 -> TXD+(B)
• Pin 1 -> RXD-(A) Pin4 -> TXD-(A)
• Repeatthe HyperTerminal Loopback Test.
